It covers the beginning from its development of the "Hansa Canon" (or "Canon Hansa") in 1935 until the end of production of the Canon 7s rangefinder in 1968. These 35mm film cameras featured lenses mounted in a Leica thread mount design, called the M39 (or in near equivalents in the first years of Canon production). Described here also is the wide range of interchangeable lenses and accessories Canon later developed for their cameras.

My favorite rangefinder is my Canon 7s with a Canon 35mm f/2.0 lens. Such a great combination. I also like my Canon P a lot, but the rangefinder is better fit for use with a 50mm lens. I have a Jupiter 8, which has some problems. I have a Jupiter 3 on order from Russia. I would really like to find a Canon 50mm f/1.4 in good condition to use with the Canon P.

Still, there are better Canon rangefinder choices. Some claim the Canon P is the best of the Canon Rangefinder bodies - mostly by people who have not tried all of them. While the P certainly is not a bad camera, I much prefer the L1, VL, VTDM and 7sZ overall as more useful and more pleasurable shooters.

The L-1's gold coated rangefinder usually stands the test of time rather well, better than the silver coated rangefinder in the later Canon VI, VI-T, and P. It's a very pleasant camera to shoot. The shutter has separate low and high speeds, with the high speed dial rotating in traditional Leica tradition. This also allows for easy double exposures, just rotate the shutter speed dial back until it locks and is ready for another shot. The lever mounted around the high speed shutter dial ...

Because of the trigger, the VI-T is a bit heavier and taller. That’s why VI-L is the best rangefinder film camera from Canon. Its weight is great for shooting outdoors. This is a perfect camera for beginning rangefinder camera users. Photo by Canon VI-L/VI-T

The Canon 7 Rangefiner 1961-1964 . Peter Dechert 1 stated that the Canon 7 had a longer development period than any previous Canon rangefinder. It also was a "clean slate" design using a completely new concept of body, rangefinder and viewfinder, and lens selection. It was 'state of the art' on its release in 1961.

The Canon L2 was one of the few Canon rangefinder cameras which identified its model number on the camera base plate. Canon L2 base plate with identification New 1956 Canon Lenses . As shown in the picture at the top of this page, Canon revised the 50mm f1.8 lens in a new lighter alloy body with a new black focusing collar. With the launch of the Canon VT and L2, Canon also introduced two faster Canon lenses: the 50mm f1.2 and the 35mm f1.8.

The Canon rangefinders of the late 1940s and early 1950s are Leica-compatible screw-mount cameras. Many were brought to the U.S. by servicemen who bought them while visiting Japan during the Korean war. Typically they were mounted with a 50mm Serenar (later, Canon) lens. Many of them are still in use, and are similar in function to the Leica III. The top speed is 1/500 for the II and 1/1000 for the III and IV models. Some models are
