Unfortunately, pictures get stored in different places on your PC depending on the where they come from. Windows itself stores images in your “Pictures” folder. Some syncing services try to respect that, but you’ll often find pictures transferred from things like DropBox, iCloud, and OneDrive in their own folders.

By default, photos taken with pre-install camera will be stored in DCIM (Digital Camera Images) folder. It keeps pictures in this folder organized and prevent third-part camera app to import images that the camera didn't capture in it. Screenshot or Photos Taken with Camera APP:

All the photos that you see in the photos app are normally retrieved from the "pictures" folder by default. I suggest you to try checking in that folder and see if you are able to find the photos. Press Windows key + E > Click "pictures" on the left pane. If it is not available in that particular folder, follow the steps below and check again.
